2001 Fiji House of Representatives elections

This was the second election held under the 1997 constitution. The elections were between 25 August 2001 and 2 September 2001, fifteen months after rebel military personnel, led by George Speight, overthrew the government of Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry. Speight and his gunmen stormed Parliament on 19 May 2000, taking the Prime Minster and most of his multi-racial cabinet hostage for 56 days. During the crisis, the military declared martial law and appointed Laisenia Qarase as caretaker Prime Minister.

The two major parties were the Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua / United Fiji Party (SDL) led by interim Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase and the Fiji Labour Party (FLP) led by Mahendra Chaudhry. 18 parties fielded 351 cadidates for the 71 constituencies. International observers from the United Nations, the British Commonwealth and the European Union declared that the elections were free and fair. Nevertheless, the dismissed Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, alleged widespread vote-rigging.

Qarase's SDL won 31 seats at stake, while Chaudhry's FLP won 27. The nationalist Conservative Alliance/Matanitu Vanua (MV) of Speight emerged as holding the balance of power, as it won 7 seats. A coalition Government was sworn in on 12 September 2001 with Mr Qarase as Prime Minister. He included in his Cabinet members of the Conservative Alliance but excluded the ethnic Indian-dominated FLP.

1992 Fiji House of Representatives elections

The bicameral Parliament elected in April 1987 was dissolved the next month following a military coup d’ etat. After a second coup in September 1987, the 1970 Constitution was formally revoked. In October 1987, the Governor-General, representing the British sovereign, resigned and Fiji became a Republic. In July 1990, a new Constitution was promulgated which provided for a parliamentary form of government and a bicameral legislature, and established a permanent majority of House seats for indigenous Fijians. All 70 members of the House of Representatives were elected from "communal" constituencies on closed electoral rolls, for registered members of a particular ethnic group. 37 seats were allocated to ethnic Fijians and only 27 to Indians, one seat was reserved for a representative of the Rotuman Islanders, with five "general electorates" set aside for various minorities including Europeans, Chinese, and Banaban Islanders.

The polling dates were originally set in March 1992 but elections were held from 23 May to 30 May. Leading contenders for the 70 House of Representatives seats were the Soqosoqo Ni Vakavulewa Ni Taukei Party (SVT) (Fijian Political Party), formed in 1990 by the Great Council of Chiefs and led by Major General Sitiveni Rabuka, and, for the Indian seats, the National Federation Party (NFP), led by Harish Sharma and the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), led by Mahendra Chaudhary.

Final results were announced on 31 May. The SVT won 30 of the 37 ethnic Fijian seats, while the NFP and the trade-union based FLP, led by Mr. Harish Chandra Sharma and Mr. Mahendra Chaudry, respectively, shared the 27 Indian seats. In return for the FLP’s agreement to participate in the new legislature, the SVT promised a review of the Constitution and other measures, including the rights of the work force.

On 2 June, Gen. Rabuka was appointed Prime Minister by President of the Republic Panaia Ganilau; a coalition (SVT-GVP-Rotuma) 19-member Cabinet was named the following day.

1987 Fiji House of Representatives elections

The fifth general election since independence was held from 4 April to 11 April 1987.

Election Result

The campaign was marked by sporadic violence. The opposition coalition comprising the National Federation Party (NFP) and the Fiji Labour Party (formed in 1985) pledged to pursue a foreign policy of nonalignment and to ban nuclear weapons from Fiji territory and, on the domestic front, focused on the issues of increased social services, lower taxes, land reform and government corruption. The ruling Alliance Party (AP) emphasized the country's booming economy and was supported by most indigenous Fijians, while the coalition, and especially the NFP, was backed by the island's Indian community.

On polling day, the conservative Alliance Party was voted out of power for the first time since independence in 1970 as its loss of five seats was picked up by the coalition. On 13 April, Labour leader Timoci Bavadra took office as Prime Minister to head the nation's first Government of mainly ethnic Indian rather than Melanesian origin; he announced the formation of his Cabinet the next day. On 14 May, however, the new Government was deposed in a military coup d'Etat.
