1982 Fiji House of Representatives elections

The fourth general election since independence was held from 10 July to 17 July 1982.

The Alliance Party retained power by winning 28 House of Representativesseats, but its overall majority was reduced from 20 to four. The NFP, led by Mr. Jai Ram Reddy, won 22 seats and the Western United Front, a new party professing a multiracial outlook and in coalition with the NFP, captured the remaining two. Voting was divided on ethnic lines, Alliance Party drawing support from the indigenous Fijian population and NFP from Fiji's Indian population. On 20 July, Sir Kamisese Mara was sworn in for his fourth term as Prime Minister.

September 1977 Fiji House of Representatives elections

The third general election since independence was held from 17 September to 24 September 1977.

Election Result

The March-April general elections earlier in the year had led to the dissolution of Parliament on June 1 after the minority Alliance Party Government had been defeated in a vote of confidence, and had resigned. While the strongest challenge to the Alliance Party again came from the National Federation Party (NFP), the latter was this time split into two factions - the "dove" faction of NFP leader Siddiq Koya and the "flower" faction under the leadership of Mr. Jai Ram Reddy - which presented separate lists of candidates.

On polling day marked by a turnout of approximately 77.5 %, these internal divisions helped to give the Alliance Party its largest overall House majority since independence in 1970. The Alliance Party won 36 seats to the Flower Faction's 12 and the Dove Faction's 3. Support for the Alliance Party was interpreted by observers as the expression of a public desire to end months of racial hostility among the nation's inhabitants. Outgoing Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara formed a new Cabinet on September 29.

March 1977 Fiji House of Representatives elections

This was the second election held under the 1970 constitution. This election was held from 19 March to 2 April 1977. A split appeared in NFP before the elections, but this was patched over by the time niminations were called for the election.

Election Result

As in 1972, the two main contenders for the 52 House seats were the ruling Alliance Party, led by outgoing Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, and the National Federation Party (NFP), headed by Mr. Siddiq Koya. On election day, the Alliance lost a number of seats but neither of the two major parties was able to claim an overall House majority (27 seats). Despite the fact that the NFP won the most seats (26), the Governor- General asked the defeated Prime Minister, whose party won only 24 seats, to form a minority Government. This touched off strong protests by the NFP. On June 1, the Governor- General dissolved Parliament after the Government was defeated in a vote of confidence. New elections were held in September 1977.
